ST. GEORGE — A St. George woman walked away from a collision early Saturday morning but found herself under arrest for DUI.
Just after 6:30 a.m., responders were dispatched on reports of an accident at Red Hills Parkway and 1000 East in St. George. When they arrived, they found a Ford Fusion that had hit the retaining wall next to Tropical Smoothie Cafe, causing the car to flip end over end and sending bricks and debris flying through the parking lot.
St. George Police Officer Robert Raybould said the force of the crash was so violent that an entire wheel and CV joint assembly was ripped from the Ford. The impact also ripped out about 8-10 feet of the retaining wall.
The driver of the Ford, 23-year-old Charmaine Gomez, of St. George, was shaken up but uninjured in the wreck, aside from minor bruising.
Raybould said officers administered field sobriety tests and determined Gomez had been driving under the influence and arrested her, taking her to Dixie Regional Medical Center to be examined before booking her into jail.
Officers did not specify what Gomez was driving under the influence of at the time of the crash, but an empty case of Bud Light was removed from the wreckage by responders.
Raybould said the street was partially blocked for about 90 minutes while workers mopped up automotive fluids, cleaned up the debris and removed the wrecked vehicle from the scene.
This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
