ST. GEORGE – Desert Hills won two games at the Bishop Gorman Tournament as part of a 4-0 night for Region 9 teams. Three of the four games were close. Read the game summaries below:
Cedar 34, Enterprise 31
The Lady Reds came out hot in the first quarter, outscoring Enterprise 15-2. The margin was significant because from then on Cedar went cold from both the field and the stripe and was outscored by the Lady Wolves in each of the final three quarters.
“We still have a lot to figure out,” said Cedar head coach John Elison. “We had bad shot selection tonight. The first person to touch the ball would take the shot instead of working for a good shot.”
Cedar hit 9 of 48 from the field and only 9 of 24 from the foul line. The Lady Reds did outrebound Enterprise 42-32 and recorded 14 steals. Individually, Dream Weaver led Cedar with 12 points. Carly Davis had eight points, four blocks and 10 rebounds. Lindsey Robinson led the team with four steals.
Cedar improves to 3-1 and will have a rematch against Canyon View on Tuesday night. The Lady Reds beat CVHS in their first game and will try to sweep them on the Lady Falcons home court. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Snow Canyon 40, Canyon View 39
After a close first half, the Lady Warriors put a strangling defense on the Lady Falcons in the third quarter, outpacing them 11-4. Leading 30-24 to start the fourth, Snow Canyon had to hold off Canyon View in the final minutes to pull out the win.
“It was ugly, but a win is a win,” said Snow Canyon head coach Dan Roden. “We had some girls in foul trouble early. We shot poorly from the floor and made some critical mental errors.”
Jasmine Lealao led the team with 11 points. Melenaite Kata had seven points and seven rebounds. Natalie Gunn matched Kata’s seven rebounds and led the team with three steals.
Snow Canyon improves to 4-1 and will host Richfield Friday night. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Desert Hills 76, Arbor View 55
In the early game of the Bishop Gorman tournament in Las Vegas, the Lady Thunder took an early big lead, then watched Arbor View pull back to within six points at the end of the third quarter. A big run in the fourth got the lead back to safe double digits.
“We started taking quick shots instead of running our offense,” said Desert Hills head coach Ron Denos. “We were playing some of our reserve players earlier than we normally do also and that is when they started their comeback.”
Ashley Beckstrand led the Thunder with 30 points. Elly Williams and Morgan Myers scored 13 and 12, respectively.
Desert Hills 46, Faith Lutheran 45
It was a much closer contest in the night game. The game was tied at halftime, but the Thunder came out in the third and shot to a slim lead of 5-6 points that they would maintain and carry into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, the Lady Crusaders began fouling midway through. Desert Hills struggled, hitting only 4 of 14 foul shots down the stretch.
“We had our best shooters at the line,” said Denos. “We missed several and a few of them were on the front ends of one-and-ones. We have to hit those pressure free throws at the end of the game.”
Desert Hills scraped by with the win, however and moved to 4-1 on the season. Beckstrand again led the team in scoring with 26 points.
Friday, Desert Hills will play Springville and host Bishop Gorman. The first game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Pacific Time. The second game is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. Pacific Time.
