SOUTHERN UTAH — Hiking enthusiasts will find no shortage of breathtaking views and geological marvels on the trails around St. George. And if you’re also a history buff, you’ll love this glimpse into the lives of the area’s early settlers via rock art and artifacts.
In this episode of “Discover the Desert,” presented by Findlay Subaru St. George, host Sydnee Imlay jumped in a new Subaru Ascent and made her way to the Anasazi Trail to explore a fascinating piece of Southern Utah’s history.

Anasazi Trail is a fun, family-friendly adventure that’s about 3 miles round-trip when hiked as an out-and-back route from the trailhead on the outskirts of Ivins. Less than 400 feet of elevation gain make it accessible for hikers of all ages. Plus, dogs are welcome and allowed to be off-leash in certain areas.
The trail winds through the scenic Santa Clara River Reserve, an area protected by the Bureau of Land Management. It’s a popular place for not only hiking but also trail running, mountain biking and horseback riding, so make sure to keep an eye on your younger explorers and furry friends.
Along with gorgeous views of Southern Utah’s iconic red rocks and the rugged edges of the Mojave Desert, Anasazi Trail offers perhaps the finest example of ancient Native American culture in the St. George area. The highlight of this hike is a collection of incredibly well-preserved petroglyphs dating back several hundred years, as well as the ruins of an Ancestral Puebloan farmstead. Take as many photos as you like, but please don’t touch!
