Truck rolls after hitting black ice in Hurricane, police say

HURRICANE — A man escaped injury Wednesday morning after hitting black ice and rolling on Old Dixie Highway 91.

At around 8:45 a.m. Wednesday morning, a man driving a Toyota Tacoma was northbound on Old Dixie Highway 91 when his truck’s tires made contact with black ice at the corner of the highway and Foothills Canyon Drive, Hurricane Police Sgt. Dan Raddatz told St. George News.

The truck rolled three times before landing in the desert brush on the side of the northbound highway.

The driver, a 41-year-old man, told police at the scene that he overcorrected when he started to fishtail, causing him to drive off the roadway, Raddatz said.

He was wearing his seatbelt and had no notable injuries when Hurricane Valley Fire District personnel arrived, Raddatz said.

The Hurricane Streets Department arrived shortly after and spread sand on the road to cover the black ice to make the road safe for drivers.

By the time the vehicle was towed away, traffic was starting to get backed up. It cleared after all emergency vehicles and the Hurricane Streets Department left the scene.

There was no citation involved in the incident, police said.
