HURRICANE — A residential neighborhood was shaken Sunday morning after a car entered a roundabout at high speeds, causing the vehicle to smash head-on into a nearby home.

According to a detailed Facebook post shared by Sgt. Dan Raddatz of the Hurricane Valley Police Department, the event unfolded around 10:55 a.m. when Hurricane City officers swiftly responded to an urgent call reporting a vehicular collision with a residence situated close to a roundabout at the intersection of 700 West and 100 North.

Initially, a witness reported seeing the driver flee the scene. However, officers discovered that the 16-year-old male driver had not fled but was instead found nearby with the resident of the impacted home. The circumstances leading to the collision came into focus, with reports indicating that the driver’s excessive speed while navigating the roundabout played a pivotal role, officers said. The young driver’s alleged attempt to negotiate the roundabout at a high rate of speed resulted in a loss of control, triggering a series of events that led to the vehicle striking the residence after an overcorrection.

Despite the impact, there were no reported injuries to either the driver or the occupants of the home. The vehicle involved in the collision was identified as a 1996 Ford Thunderbird.

In the aftermath of the incident, the driver was cited for driving at speeds deemed unsuitable for the prevailing road conditions, in addition to other non-moving violations. Following the issuance of citations, the driver was “released into the custody of a responsible adult.”

This report is based on statements from police and may not contain the full scope of findings.
