What’s Going There: REI and Hobby Lobby come to Bluff Street, plus more exciting additions

ST. GEORGE — Piles of lumber, tractors, workers walking around in hard hats – welcome to Southern Utah. The area’s growth is seemingly unstoppable, with new buildings and renovations springing up everywhere you look.

In this episode of “What’s Going There,” Southern Utah’s show about developments and businesses in the works, Tom Callister with Linx Commercial Real Estate visited St. George Place, the shopping center on South Bluff Street preparing for a spectacular renaissance.

Developers have expansion plans for St. George Place, perhaps best known to locals as the former Kmart plaza near the intersection of 700 South and Bluff Street. Outdoor retail giant REI recently announced the opening of its first Southern Utah location in St. George Place in 2025. Hobby Lobby, another family favorite, is also expected to open next year.

“People have been asking about Hobby Lobby for years,” Callister said. “We finally have them coming.”

Christensen’s, a longtime retail anchor in St. George Place, will stay put and reopen in the fall of 2025 after an extensive renovation. The store is currently preparing for the remodel with a closeout sale on all inventory.

Perhaps you’ve noticed the eye-catching building going up along Riverside Drive just off Interstate 15? That’s the newest location of Strap Tank Brewery, a Utah-based brewery, restaurant and pub due to open next spring.

Several more businesses have just opened in the Gateway Commercial Center, which is just north of I-15 across from the Red Cliffs Mall. New tenants include Garage Doors Only, Bath Fitter, Patio Furniture and Confetti Kids Club, a 10,000-square-foot indoor playground with trampolines, climbing walls, ball pits and more.

“We’re going to continue to see new buildings, we’re going to continue to see construction,” Callister said. “The commercial markets are really vibrant here in Southern Utah. I know that’s not the case nationwide, but we’re glad it’s going on here.”
