ST. GEORGE — A garage fire Friday at a home for sale in a neighborhood near Valley View Drive brought out three fire engines from the St. George Fire Department, which made quick work of the blaze and confined the damage to the garage.
There were no injuries, though there were people in the 159 Shadow Point Drive residence. Firefighters said other than smoke damage and some burned boxes and debris, the only other damage to the home was to the garage door, which firefighters were forced to break through.
The fire was first reported around 10:10 a.m., and by 10:25, firefighters were already mopping up.
“The guys responded really quickly,” Battalion Chief Rick Nelson said. “They happened to be at another station doing maintenance and got here just real quick. They saw light smoke coming out of the garage. So they kind of knew that it was confined to the garage.”
As for how the fire started, firefighters said it appeared to be accidentally started by a child at the home.
“One of the kids in the home was just playing,” Nelson said, though he said it was unclear just what combustible they were playing with.
A for sale sign was posted on the lawn in front of the home, but Nelson said it shouldn’t take much to get the garage, back in shape. Other than the presence of firefighters, the only signs there had been a fire were some smoke along some walls and objects in the garage, and burnt boxes. The rest of the structure was unscathed.
“I think damage-wise, because it was confined to the objects that actually started, it really will keep the cost for repair down,” Nelon said.
