To address safety concerns, Cedar City Council greenlights crosswalk near golf course

CEDAR CITY — A new crosswalk is coming to 900 North to address safety concerns caused by increased traffic in the area.

The crosswalk was proposed earlier this month at the April 3 Cedar City Council meeting, and Jared Barnes, head of the city’s Cedar Ridge Golf Course Division, presented it.

The 18-hole regulation course is located on Cedar City’s north end, and hosts golf teams from Southern Utah University, Cedar High School and Canyon View High School, as well as various men’s and women’s associations, according to the city’s website. It also holds the Cedar Ridge Amateur Golf Tournament and Ladies Invitational, among others.

For the last three decades, the 900 North was frequented primarily by those traveling to Thunderbird Gardens, a recreation area but traffic has increased recently due to various factors, Barnes said.

“It’s a whole different animal nowadays,” he said. “And I just worry every day. We had 270 players today because it was a beautiful day.”

“The chief just asked me about speed limits,” Barnes continued. “I told him, “I think it’s 35 (mph) heading east, but I think heading west, coming down from either Thunderbird Gardens or all the new development, it’s like 70 (mph) — they come flying down that road, and the visibility is not great.”

The crosswalk will be painted near the golf course’s 18th hole, allowing golf carts to cross the street to the clubhouse, Barnes said, adding that the city will also install signage to raise awareness for both golfers and drivers.

“Is it going to solve everything? Probably not,” he said. “But I would love it to just be a deterrent and be visible.”

The crosswalk proposal was approved on April 10 via the council’s consent agenda, where multiple items receive a single up or down vote.

Cedar City Leisure Services Director Ken Nielson told Cedar City News that the signs have been ordered, so work will likely begin in the next few weeks.
