St. George Police officer Tiffany Mitchell told St. George News the crash involved a black Toyota 4Runner that collided with a green 1955 Willys-Overland pickup truck near the intersection of South Dixie Drive and Mesa Palms Drive shortly before 9 a.m.

The Toyota driver was making a left turn from Mesa Palms Drive to head north on South Dixie Drive when they reportedly struck the pickup truck that was heading south on the same street.

Mitchell said the Toyota driver saw the vehicle in the right-hand lane but did not see the pickup truck in the lane closest to the median. The Toyota collided nearly head-on with the pickup truck’s passenger side.

The impact crushed the front of the Toyota and spun the vehicles across the roadway, Mitchell said. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

The driver of the pickup truck reportedly sustained minor injuries and was transported to St. George Regional Hospital for evaluation and treatment.

Mark Bailey told St. George News that his 90-year-old father owned the pickup for more than five decades after purchasing it in 1968 — roughly 13 years after the vehicle came off the assembly line.

A family member was driving the vintage truck at the time of the crash, Bailey said, adding that it’s unlikely the vehicle could be restored or repaired, but he was glad that no one was seriously injured in the crash.

Traffic along South Dixie Drive in both directions was partially blocked for approximately 45 minutes while responders tended to the scene and cleared debris. Mitchell said the driver of the Toyota was later cited for failing to yield on a left-hand turn.

This report is based on statements from police, emergency personnel or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
