HURRICANE — An 18-year-old man drowned at Sand Hollow State Park on Saturday, according to authorities.
The victim was from Las Vegas and was swimming with three other people. They were swimming in the “dive park” area, which is a common location for swimming, according to Sand Hollow park manager Candace Smith.
Smith said swimmers often try to make it to an island in the water, and due to past drowning incidents and an attempt to mitigate the risk, a “swimming dock” was installed by a past manager for people to stop to breathe.
When the victim did not resurface, authorities were called at 2:20 p.m. and search and rescue members found him 19 feet under the water two hours later. The identity of the victim has not yet been released.
