Early Saturday morning, officers were dispatched to a gas station on Red Hills Parkway in Washington City on a report of a possible burglary. They arrived to find the front entrance door to the business heavily damaged. The gas station was closed at the time of the incident.

Washington City Police Lt. Kory Klotz told St. George News the suspect reportedly threw a rock at the entrance door, shattering the glass, and then entered the store and took cigarettes and other merchandise before fleeing the area on foot.

Officers say that just prior to the break-in, the same man entered a different convenience store to purchase cigarettes, but the sale was refused after he failed to provide ID for the purchase. Officers then obtained security footage of the suspect inside the store, photos of which are included in this report.

Klotz said the break-in likely occurred late Friday night or early Saturday morning. He said the suspect appears to be in his late teens or early 20s. The footage shows him wearing a gray “Puma” hooded sweatsuit.

The individual is considered “a person of interest at this point,” Klotz added.

The loss to the store has yet to be determined.

Klotz asked that anyone with information that could help identify the suspect in the surveillance images or who can assist in the investigation call the Washington City Police Department at 435-986-1511. Reference incident number 24z003816.

This report is based on statements from court records, police or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings. Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
