ST. GEORGE – The Dixie Power Kite Festival returns Saturday to celebrate 15 years of providing wholesome family entertainment and promoting reading in Washington County schools. This annual event will be held at the SunRiver St. George Golf Course from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., featuring games, food vendors, a live concert and, of course, kite flying fun for the whole family.
Qualifying students will receive a free high-quality kite or age-appropriate book as a reward for their reading efforts this school year. Those who did not qualify may still bring their own kites or purchase one at the event to fly in a designated area.
Admission, parking, shuttles and most activities are free. There will also be games and activities, as well as food vendors.
Throughout the day, several school choirs and local entertainment groups will be performing, and the national anthem will be presented at noon. To top off the event, there will be a free music concert featuring Southern Utah-based indie rock band “Pangea” at 6 p.m.
Last year, the festival raised $30,000 for the Washington County School District Foundation and 2,300 young bookworms earned a free kite.

Just another event for mommas to showcase their babies. Definitely not an event for adults or kite enthusiasts.
No,it is for kids of all ages to have some fun, and raise a little money for the school district. But I guess if you a hardcore kite “enthusiast” you can just go fly a kite with all of your kite “enthusiast” buddies somewhere else.
Last time I went, it was just a bunch of inflatable bounce houses and other stuff for toddlers. There were some kiddies on a stage, some singing (badly out of key). Another venue was another group of kids, just older than toddlers were doing some dance routine. Venders had a lot of kiddie toys for sale. If you’ve ever been to a real community kite festival, you’d see they’re quite exciting and a social activity for people with a common interest in kiting. St George, though, it’s just another event for parents to showcase their kiddies and try showing to others that they are family oriented. What a joke. Like I said, it’s just another event where mommas are showcasing their babies.
These St George Kite Festivals are boring. Never attract anybody outside of St George. It’d be nice if there was at least a beer tent, a real band or something other than the same old boring St George crap. I quit going to these years ago, cause it’s the same boring nothing year after year.
This is a fundraiser for the school district. It is also a celebration for children reading. Children all over the district have been tracking their reading minutes since January. Saturday they have the opportunity to exchange their reading calendars for a kite or a book. It is for children, families and anyone who supports the school district. Not every event in the area is for everyone. This event is for people who love children, want to acknowledge their hard work reading after school hours and their families who want to support their success. Teachers appreciate all the work of the school district to coordinate this event, as we are the beneficiaries. We have the opportunity for our classroom to receive some money from this fundraiser to supplement our classroom supplies. The $100 I received last year meant I spent $100 less of my personal money for the children in my classroom.
