ST. GEORGE – Two men are in jail following their arrest early Saturday morning by a Mesquite Police officer who noticed they were driving a vehicle reported stolen earlier in the year.
At approximately 2:30 a.m. a Mesquite Police officer saw a vehicle traveling through Mesquite which had been reported stolen out of Mesquite in July 2016. The officer was able to safely stop the vehicle and interview both the male driver and the male passenger, according to a press release issued Monday by the Mesquite Police Department.
Through the officer’s investigation, he learned the driver was a fugitive from justice out of Arizona and had an active felony warrant for his arrest for possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of methamphetamines.
The passenger also had an active felony warrant for his arrest out of the Las Vegas Justice Court.
Both the driver and the passenger were taken into custody for the warrants and arrested on additional criminal charges.
The driver, Cristoval Romero, 40, of St George, was arrested and charged with one felony count of possession of a stolen vehicle and one felony count of fugitive from another state with a warrant.
Passenger Joel Segler, 37, of St George, was arrested and charged with one felony count of possession of a stolen vehicle. Segler was also taken into custody for the active felony warrant out of the Las Vegas Justice Court.
The stolen vehicle was processed for evidence and then returned to the owner.
“This is yet another example of the caliber of people we have working for the Mesquite Police Department,” Mesquite Police Chief Troy Tanner said. “This officer was out and about at 2:30 in the morning proactively looking for criminal activity. I am proud of my police officers and the quality work they perform on a daily basis.”
Due to the felony charges, both suspects were transported and booked into the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas.
Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
